The History of VA’s Oldest Chapel

The History of VA’s Oldest Chapel

At the end of the Civil War, thousands of disabled Union Veterans tried to rebuild their lives at one of the locations of the newly established National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. From the start, providing for their spiritual needs was considered essential. In 1868, the first VA chapel building was authorized at the Dayton National Home (now the Dayton VAMC). Dedicated in 1870, scheduled church services were performed in multiple faiths and languages, as were baptisms, funerals, and weddings. This article tells the story of VA’s oldest chapel and this special era in the history of VA and America’s Veterans.
